Who may use the library?

Anyone may use the library on-site; however, some services are only available to Columbia College faculty, staff, students, and alumnae.

South Carolina Statewide Borrowing program
Edens Library also participates in the South Carolina Statewide Library Borrowing program in which patrons must present a state-wide borrowing card to check out materials, and each library sets the limit of books that may be checked out. Individual library policies are available on the Statewide Library Borrowing Agreement Library Information page. Edens Library will loan two books from the General Collection to a Statewide Library Borrowing Agreement patron.

Where is the library located?

In the center of campus, opposite Daniel Dining Hall/Humphries Hall (Item #12 on the Columbia College Campus Map).

Where can I park when I come to the library?

Students, faculty, and staff should comply by the parking regulations that are outlined in the Columbia College Student Handbook.

Visitors' parking is clearly marked and located throughout campus as well as in specified lots. Visitors may park in Lots A and B (corner of Columbia College Drive and Colonial Drive), Lot G (Colonial Drive), Lot I (Columbia College Drive), or city parking spaces. Visitors who park in visitor lots are not required to display a College decal or a temporary permit. (Campus Map)

Where I can I get a library card?

A library card is required to check out library materials. For Columbia College students, faculty, and staff the Columbia College I.D. card is also your library card. I.D. cards are issued at registration without cost. After this time, I.D.s must be picked up at the Columbia College Police Department (Item #9 on the Columbia College Campus Map) during normal business hours (9 am - 5 pm, Monday-Friday during regular school sessions; 9 am - 3 pm during the summer months).

Columbia College alumnae must present a valid driver's license and an Alumnae Patron Borrowing Card to check out library materials.

Patrons participating in the South Carolina Statewide Library Borrowing program must present a state-wide borrowing card, a college I.D., and a valid driver's license to check out materials.

*Note: Alumnae and South Carolina Statewide Library Borrowing Agreement patrons may only check out two books at one time.

Are food and drinks allowed in the library?

No food is allowed in the library. However, drinks with a secure lid are allowed.

As a student, how can I get a job in the library?

The library hires students every semester to work in Circulation, Reference, Periodicals, the Media Center, and Technical Services. We offer flexible hours to accommodate your class schedule.

Does the library accept donations of money, books, etc.?

Gift items are accepted by the J. Drake Edens Library with the understanding that the library has the discretion to add or discard titles. Contact the Collection Development Librarian for further information.

Are there any group study areas in the library?

Yes, the library has a total of six study rooms, two or which are ideal for group study:

Room 217
Located on the Main Floor (at the far end of the stacks near the microfilm cabinets), this room has a large table and can accommodate up to six people. Ideal for group study!

Room 309
Located on the 3rd floor (along the wall at the far end of the stacks), this room can accommodate eight people and has a chalkboard. Great for group project work!

When was the Library built and/or remodeled or renovated?

The Library was built in 1967. Renovations have been made on the 1st (bottom) floor in the Juvenile section and in the Overton Media Center, and in 2002, the Overton Classroom for Library Instruction (Room 120) was added. Most recently, the Main Floor of the Library was renovated during the Summer and Fall of 2007 to create the new Vandiver Reference Center.

What facilities and services are offered for disabled library users?

Anyone needing assistance, please ask at the Circulation desk on the Main floor.

Where is the elevator located?

The elevator is located in the hallway near the Circulation Manager's office & the Circulation Desk on the Main floor.

Are there phones available for public use?

A telephone is available for campus and local calls on the 1st floor (basement) across from the English department.

Where are the restrooms located?

Restrooms are located on the 1st (basement) and 3rd floors.

Where are the water fountains located?

There are water fountains on every floor. They are located near the restrooms on the 1st (basement) and 3rd (top) floors and down the hall from the Circulation Manager's office and Circulation desk on the Main floor.
